Not Just For Kilts... (Weekend Pinterest Picks)

Mad for Plaid?  I know what you might be thinking: it's so old-fashioned, so dark, so Scottish.  But, don't dismiss it out of hand.  Plaid can really help you achieve a look of warmth, preppiness, and most importantly during the holidays, utilize a classic Christmas motif.  I remember the first bedspread I picked out for my very first apartment at nineteen with my ex husband was a green and blue plaid pattern, because I was on the hunt for something masculine that he wouldn't object to!  Plaid is masculine, but I think I show below that it can be very feminine too when used properly.

I personally love it all year, but use it sparingly.  I think a little plaid goes a long way.  I'm not usually a fan of wallpaper (too permanent, too overwhelming) but I give an example or two below where it really works in the living room.  If you are going to upholster a piece or two, make sure the other upholstered items are a solid or neutral accent color and you can't go wrong.  An even better way to incorporate plaid is in the accessories: throw pillows, blankets, lampshades, rugs, bowls, mugs, and even vintage pieces (like this old Better Homes and Gardens cookbook or recipe box).

I had to call out two favorites first:

First this hipster wonder made me laugh, I loved it so much.  I think the plaid upholstery is just SUCH a contrast to the elegant settee, and that is what makes it thrifty and brilliant.

And this one?  This really proves that Plaid can be used in an elegant and modern space.  The simple, black, white and blue color scheme of this room is very contemporary and elegant, and yet?  Welcoming.  Those plaid chairs just ground the space and make it more homey, more cozy, than the space would be without them.  And those curtains are pretty darn similar to my current living room curtains.

    1. Yes, this was exactly my point! The first instinct would be to say "no" to it. But I hate cookie cutter stuff, pottery barn knockoffs, snooze snooze snooze. I'm all about trying something a little daring and I love how classic New england that pattern is. It reminds my of my grandfather and a warm fire.
